Memorial Day Message

America’s freedom is a sacred trust. My family has a traditional love affair with America and has always answered when call to arms has sounded. My Grandfather and his three brothers as well as two other great uncles and an aunt all served in WWII.

My dad’s and my namesake uncle was wounded on Iwo Jima and medically discharged before he was old enough to even join the military. He was only 16. It profoundly affected the remainder of his life.

Another uncle served in Korea, yet brother served in the hot seat of the cold war and my dad served in Southeast Asia including Vietnam. My dad refused to accept combat pay for his service in Vietnam. He knew what those who were actually engaged in combat endured and would never compare his small sacrifice to theirs.

I am proud of my family and my country.

Our freedom is a stewardship. It was purchased with the blood of our ancestors and passed on to us as a sacred trust. We absolutely must not break the chain. Thomas Jefferson once said, “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” Shame on the generation who because of apathy looses our precious freedom and fails to preserve it for their progeny. America was intended to live forever free!

Today, not a day goes by that we don’t hear about another liberty under assault by some group of misguided people, usually in our state or federal government. We must not remain silent while this happens. Jefferson also said, “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.”

Jefferson taught that one of the ways that we must be vigilant in protecting our freedoms is to educate ourselves and children about our history and about the documents of freedom. He said, “Educate and inform the whole mass of the people… They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty.”
